This lockup device is disposed in the space between the front cover 2 of a torque converter and the turbine 4, and mechanically connects the front cover 2 and the turbine 4. The lockup device includes a clutch section 30 and a release section 31. The clutch section 30 is disposed in the path of transmission of power from the front cover 2 to the turbine 4, and in a set attitude, the clutch section 30 is in a clutch engaged state in which power from the front cover 2 is transmitted to the turbine 4. The release section 31 is operated by hydraulic pressure and sets the clutch section 30, which is in the clutch engaged state, into a clutch disengaged state to block the transmission of power from the front cover 2 to the turbine 4.
