PURPOSE: To improve the service life and to also downsize a hot strip mill by specifying a ratio of a body length to a body diameter and the body diameter and forming the outside layer out of a wear resistant high alloy metal and a body core part and neck parts out of a high strength steel.
CONSTITUTION: A shaft member 7 of a body core part 1, having a length from the end of both neck parts 4, 4 to welding joints 5, 5, is prepared and an outside layer 2 is diffusely joined on the member 7. Then, shaft members 8 forming a residual neck part are welded to both end of the member 7 to form neck parts 4 of a prescribed length. A ratio lB/DB of a roll body length lB to a body diameter DB and a body diameter DB are selected to be ≥4 and <500mm, respectively. The outside layer 2 is composed of a wear resistant high alloy metal; the layer 2 and the body core part 1 are diffusely joined by hot isostatic pressing, the core part 1 and the neck parts 4, 4 are formed out of a high strength steel and the neck parts 4, 4 are welded at positions near to the body end, respectively.
