PURPOSE: To obtain a depolymerized coal convertible to a light liquid product in a high yield with mild hydrotreatment by treating with a swelling solvent, after depolymerizing a coal by bringing a fine coal into contact with a hard acid in the presence of a soft base and extracting with a polar solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A coal is depolymerized by bringing fine coal particles of 10-1,000 μm particle size into contact with a hard acid (the heat of reaction with dimethylsulfid is 10-30 kcal/mol, e.g. methane sulfonic acid) at temperatures of 15-75°C for about one hour, in the presence of a soft base (the heat of reaction with boron trifluoride is 10-17 kcal/mol., e.g. ethylmercaptan) at temperatures of 0-100°C. The depolymerized coal is treated by extraction with a polar solvent (e.g. methanol) for removing a part of the hard acid, the soft base and mineral contaminants. And, then the depolymerized coal is treated with a swelling solvent having a density of 1.2-2.6 (chlorinated or brominated solvent, e.g. methylene chloride) for removing the mineral contaminants unremoved by the extraction.
