Abstract:
In a low-substituted alkyl and/or hydroxyalkyl cellulose ether powder with a degree of substitution of 0.05 to 1.0 molar, at least 95 weight percent of the particles have an aspect ratio of 1.0 to 1.5. The powder has good water retention properties, feels pleasant to the skin, and finds application for example as a dispersion stabiliser, or as a viscosity adjustment agent for foods, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and aqueous coatings. The powder may be made by a method including the step of swelling and dispersing the cellulose in water for shear trituration, or by dissolving it in an alkaline solution for trituration during or after neutralisation by acid.
