To provide a lubricant having excellent reducing effects on coefficient of friction, and to provide a grease having the excellent reducing effects on the coefficient of friction.

The lubricant is characterized by being a pyridinium salt type ionic liquid crystal compound represented by general formula (1) [wherein, R1 represents an 8-22C alkyl group, or a group containing an unsaturated bond represented by general formula (2) {wherein, R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; and B represents -(CH2)m-, -(CH2)m-O-, -CO-O-(CH2)m-, or -CO-O-(CH2)m-O- (wherein, m represents 5-20)}; R2 represents a 1-5C alkyl group; A1represents an oxygen atom, NH, CH2 or a sulfur atom; A2 represents an oxygen atom, NH, CH2 or a sulfur atom; and X represents a halogen atom].
