To provide a lubricant, particularly a lubricant for magnetic recording medium in which excellent lubricating ability is kept under various use conditions and lubricating effect is retained even in long-time use.
The lubricant is obtained by mixing at least one compound selected from compounds represented by general formula (a) (wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each hydrogen, an aliphatic alkyl group or an aliphatic alkenyl group and at least either one of R1 and R2 is hydrogen and at least either one of R3 and R4 is hydrogen; m is an integer of 1-6 and n is an integer of 1-5 and p and q are each an integer of 0-30 and r is an integer of 1-12) with at least one compound selected from compounds represented by general formula (b) (wherein R5 and R6 are each an aliphatic alkyl group or an aliphatic alkenyl group; x is an integer of 1-6 and y is an integer of 1-5 and s and t are each an integer of 0-30 and u is an integer of 1-12) and general formula (c) (wherein R7 is a fluoroalkyl group, a fluoroalkenyl group, a fluoroether group or a fluoropolyether and R8 is an aliphatic alkyl group or an aliphatic alkenyl group and a is an integer of 1-12) and preferably further mixing the mixture with a compound represented by general formula (d) (wherein R9 and R10 are each hydrogen, an aliphatic alkyl group or an aliphatic alkenyl group; b is an integer of 1-12; v is an integer of 1-12; w is an integer of 1-6; z is an integer of 1-5; h and k are each an integer of 0-30). The lubricant is used to form a lubricant layer of a magnetic recording medium.
