Abstract:
Metal-working lubricants comprise (a) a base lubricant comprising a grease, a mineral oil or a synthetic oil, (b) an antiwear agent comprising a mixt. of a polypropylene glycol (PPG) and sulphur, and (c) a solubilising agent comprising an alcohol of formula ROH (where R is 5-30C alkyl or alkenyl). The solubilising agent increases the stability of the lubricants. The PPG pref. has a mol.wt. of 400-10000 (esp. 1000-4000). The sulphur can be present as elemental S or as an organic sulphide, disulphide or polysulphide. The lubricant pref. contains 0.2-20 (esp. 1-6) wt % of (b)+(c). The PPG: ROH wt. ratio is pref. 1:0.1-10 (esp. 1:1). Component (b) pref. contains 0.01-80 (esp. 0.05-40) wt % of S based on the wt. of PPG.
