PURPOSE: To improve the compatibility with fluorocarbon 134a, etc., and the flowability at low temperature by incorporating an ester of a specific polyhydric alcohol with carboxylic acids comprising a dicarboxylic acid and a monocarboxylic acid.
CONSTITUTION: An ester is produced by reacting a polyhydric alcohol of the given formula (wherein n is 1-4) (e.g. dipentaerythritol) with carboxylic acids comprising a 2-10C dicarboxylic acid (i) (e.g. adipic acid) in an amount of 0.1-0.7mol per mol of the alcohol and a 6C or lower monocarboxylic acid (ii) (e.g. a mixture of pentanoic acid, 2-methylbutanoic acid and 3-methylbutanoic acid) in such an amount that the total amount of the components (i) and (ii) is equivalent to that of the alcohol. A lubricating agent is obtained by using the ester and, if desired, and epoxy compound, additives, etc.
