To provide a lubricating oil composition which contains Mg in a relatively high concentration but can reduce bore polishing and a sulfate ash.
This lubricating oil composition for diesel engines comprises (a) a lubricating oil base stock having a lubricating viscosity; (b) at least 0.6 to 3.0 mass% of an antioxidant component selected from ash-free amine compounds and/or sulfur-free phenolic compounds; (c) a lubricant component selected from magnesium sulfonates, magnesium salicylate and magnesium phenate, and having a total base number (TBN) of 350 mg per g of KOH and gives Mg of 0.05 mass% to the lubricant composition; and, if necessary, (d) 0.0 to 1.8 mass% of a metal hydrocarbyl dithiophosphate compound, and has an ash content of 0.6 to 2.0 mass% measured according to ASTM D874.
