To obtain a high-quality lubricating oil by oligomerization, using a specific catalyst, of a feedstock produced from inexpensive and readily available raw materials.
This lubricating oil having a viscosity index of ≥120 and a pour point of ≤45°C is obtained by oligomerization of (A) a feedstock comprising at least one kind of 5-18C(pref. 6-12C)1-olefin in the presence of (B) an oligomerization catalyst consisting of ionic liquid. The component A is an olefin stream produced by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The component B is a mixture of salts soluble at temperatures lower than room temperature, that is, a mixture of (i) an aluminum or gallium compound and (ii) at least one kind of (alkyl- substituted) salt selected from imidazolium halides, pyridinium halides and phosphonium halides.
