To obtain a luminescent material capable of exhibiting a strong emission of a light even in a protonic solvent by forming the material from a ruthenium complex having a specific nitrogen-containing cyclic compound as a ligand.
This luminescent material is composed of a dipyridophenazine compound/ruthenium complex of formula I (R1 and R2 are each a 1-4C alkyl; bpy is bipyridine), or a tetrapyridophenazine compound/ruthenium complex of formula II (R3 and R4 are each a 1-4C alkyl). The compound of formula I is exemplified by a compound of formula III, and the compound is obtained by mixing 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline with potassium bromide, adding concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid to the obtained mixture to react them, dissolving the obtained compound of formula IV and bis(2,2'- bipyridine)dichlororuthenium (II) monohydrate in ethanol, heating and refluxing the resultant solution, adding an aqueous solution of saturated lithium perchlorate to the refluxed product, dissolving the obtained complex and 1,2- phenylenediamine in ethanol, and heating and refluxing the obtained ethanol solution.
