To provide a substance useful for treatment, etc., of life-style related diseases and capable of effectively controlling serum lipid concentration and blood sugar.
The present invention provides a cholesterol oxide which can be functionalized as an antagonist of LXR (Liver X receptor). The present invention provides, further, a cholesterol oxide having 0-0.059 Rf value, obtained by thin layer chromatography carried out under specific conditions. The cholesterol oxide can be obtained, e.g. by eluting the heated product of cholesterol in turn with each 5 ml of four kinds of mixed solvents in which volume ratio of diethyl ether: acetone are each 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100 by using a silica gel column having 1 cm inner diameter and 6 cm length and fractionating these eluted solution every 2.5 ml and further fractionating the resultant specific fraction by a reverse phase HPLC.
