To provide a method for producing p-xylene and a catalyst for sufficiently increasing selectivity of p-xylene.
The method for synthesizing p-xylene is to carry out a reaction of toluene in a gas phase in the presence of the catalyst and obtain p-xylene. The catalyst is H type ZSM-5 zeolite 11 to the outside surface of which a deactivation treatment is applied by supporting a rare earth element. The rare earth element is preferably cerium or lanthanum and the supported amount is preferably 5-30 wt.% to the H type ZSM-5 zeolite. In synthesizing p-xylene a disproportionate reaction of toluene proceeds by using acid points in pores 12 of the H type ZSM-5 zeolite 11 to the outside surface of which the deactivation treatment is applied. W/F (g/h/mol) which expresses a contact time of toluene with the H type ZSM-5 zeolite 11 to the outside surface of which the deactivation treatment is applied is preferably 1.6-17 gh/mol.
