Abstract:

To provide a system and method for freeze-cutting the target tissue of a patient.

This system and method include a freezing chip provided at the distal end of a catheter. The freezing chip is made of a conductive polymer material which is heat-set into a helical formation. The freezing chip has a composition tube inside. The freezing chip becomes straight when a correction member is positioned within the composition tube, and it becomes helical when the correction member is not in the composition tube. The freezing chip, when in a straight-line shape, is guided to the target section through the vasculature of a patient. At the target section, after the correction member is removed, the freezing chip is made into a helical shape so that it can be in contact with the surrounding tissues around the target section. A coolant fluid is then introduced into an expansion chamber of the freezing chip, which makes the freezing chip cool enough to freeze-cut the surrounding tissues.
