To provide a machining apparatus capable of reducing the thickness of a substrate while maintaining the glass strength, providing a display panel with high flatness and dimensional accuracy, and increasing a yielding and also provide a method of manufacturing a display panel.
This machining apparatus comprises a slitting grinding wheel 22 for forming a groove in the direction orthogonal to the surface direction of a pair of glass substrates 2 having a liquid crystal sandwiched therebetween and a surface grinding wheel 21 for grinding and/or polishing the surface of one or the other of the pair of glass substrates 2 in the thickness direction. A groove M is formed from one glass substrate 3 of the pair of glass substrates 2 to near the other glass substrate 4 by cutting with the slitting grinding wheel 22. The surface of the one glass substrate 2 is ground by the surface grinding wheel 21, and the surface of the other glass substrate 4 of the inverted pair of glass substrates 2 is ground to at least the portion where the groove M is formed by the surface grinding wheel 21.
