To provide a magnetic compass for surveying use equipped with a power drive function device capable of reducing indication errors of the magnetic needle.

An apparatus comprises a magnetic compass provided with a magnetic needle; a collimation device linked to the magnetic compass to be rotatable variably in azimuth angle around a vertical axis and in elevation angle around a horizontal axis; a laser range finder disposed integrally with the collimation device; and a battery box 22 for housing a battery that supplies electric power to the laser range finder. The battery box 22 comprises a box body 222 fixed to the laser range finder and a cover 224 made movable relative to the box body 222 to enable the battery to be put in and taken out; a first magnetic shielding material 30 and a second magnetic shielding material 32 are respectively provided in the box body 222 and the cover 224; and the first magnetic shielding material and the second magnetic shielding material overlap each other in the boundary part between them to so form a magnetic circuit as to cover a pair of flanks, the bottom face and the top face of a virtual rectangular parallelepiped surrounding the battery.
