PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic disk having excellent durability by providing this disk with a lubricating layer varying in the ratio of the excess component and fixed component of a lubricant in a data area and a CSS area.
CONSTITUTION: An Ni-P plating layer 2, a magnetic layer 3 and a protective layer 4 are formed on an Al substrate 1 and the lubricating layer 5 is formed on the surface of the disk. The lubricating layer 5 varies in the ratio of the fixed layer 5a and the excess layer 5b in the CSS area 6 and the data area 7. The lubricating layer 6 is formed over the entire part of the magnetic disk formed with the protective layer 4 by using a lubricant having the low ratio of functional groups and thereafter, the lubricant of the data area 7 is removed by a solvent and the lubricating layer 5 having the high ratio of the functional groups is again formed. Even if a magnetic head floated by such formation moves in the data area 7, there is no transfer of the lubricant and, therefore, even if CSS is executed in this state, the attraction of the magnetic head does not arise. The sufficient traveling durability is assured by the film thickness of the lubricating layer 6 in spite of the intermittent contact of the magnetic head and the magnetic disk of the data area by the collapse of the balance of the magnetic head by disturbance or infiltrating dust, etc.
