PURPOSE: To make it possible to attain a high density recording by a construction wherein a base layer of a magnetic disk is made of prescribed glass and a prescribed rough surface enabling withdrawal of a head is formed on the surface of the inner periphery side or the outer periphery side of the magnetic disk.

CONSTITUTION: A base layer of a magnetic disk 1 is made of prescribed glass so as to improve smoothness and the degree of flatness and, besides, a prescribed rough surface 3 enabling withdrawal of a head is formed on a recording surface of the disk on the surface at the inner peripheral side or the outer peripheral side of the magnetic disk 1 so that it be an area for contact-start-stop (CSS) and that prevention of sticking of the head etc. can be made thereby. According to this constitution, a gap between the head and the disk surface can be narrowed and it is made possible to correspond easily to a high recording density of the disk.
