PURPOSE: To improve the precision of position detection, by arranging a single or plural couples of magnetic poles which face each other with a gap between so that their shifted distance along the gap line is greater than the gap length.
CONSTITUTION: A multi-gap head 10 is arranged at an interval on a straight line making an angle (m) to a tape running direction shown by an arrow (a) is 0<m≤90°, while facing a magnetic tape 4 for a breadthwise scanning rotary head recording mechanism; and this head has plural gaps 15. Those gaps allow magnetic pole cores to face each other with a shift of distance l, and have gap length 2g while l>2g. This simple constitution improves signal quality, obtains high position detection precision, and provides a large playback output.
