PURPOSE: To improve the picture quality of a reproduced picture by controlling a gain of a frequency compensation means in response to an average level of a luminance signal led out from an FM signal demodulation means.
CONSTITUTION: A lightness detection section 9 consists of a clamp circuit 91 applying DC recovery to a luminance signal outputted from a FM demodulation circuit 6, an integration circuit 92 integrating the luminance signal subject to DC recovery so as to detect a mean level and a comparator 93 comparing a detection output level of the integration circuit 92 with an output voltage level of a reference voltage source Ref and outputting a DC voltage with a level in response to the result of comparison. The output voltage of the comparator 93 is given to an PM equalizer circuit 5a as an output of the detection section 9. When the detection output is higher than a predetermined reference level, the gain in the FM equalizer 5a is decreased and when the detection output is lower than the reference level, the gain of the FM equalizer 5a is increased. Thus, sharpness adjustment of a picture suitable for the lightness of the picture is attained.
