PURPOSE: To improve the crystallinity and magnetic characteristics of a magnetic recording medium by constituting the medium by forming a 43-cobalt layer having a specific thickness between a substrate and cobalt-ferrite film as a base layer.
CONSTITUTION: A 43-cobalt layer having a thickness of ≥1,500 is formed between a substrate and cobalt-ferrite film as a base layer. The crystal structure of the 43-cobalt layer (Co3O4 layer) is made to the same spinel type as that of the cobalt ferrite, with their lattice constants close to each other. Moreover, since the Co3O4 layer is formed at a temperature of about 150°C, the layer shows a relatively good crystallinity. Thus, the cobalt-ferrite film is formed on the Co3O4 layer previously formed on a amorphous glass substrate, etc., instead of forming the cobalt-ferrite film directly on the substrate, etc. Therefore, this magnetic recording medium can be improved in crystallinity and magnetic characteristics and reduced in cost.
