PURPOSE: To produce a magnetic recording medium having a low coeff. of friction of the surface and excellent in durability while satisfying glide height characteristics.

CONSTITUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a substrate 11, a magnetic layer 13 disposed on the substrate 11, a protective layer 14 disposed on the magnetic layer 13 and a lubricant layer 15 disposed on the protective layer 14. The protective layer 14 is made of a carbon-silicon composite material and the lubricant layer 15 is made of a polymer obtd. by vapor phase polymn. and consists of a fixed layer 15a stuck on the protective layer 14 and a free layer 15b formed on the fixed layer 15a.
