PURPOSE: To prolong the life of the title magnetic recording medium by vapor- depositing perfluoroalkylcarboxylic acid on the surface of a magnetic recording medium obtained by providing a ferromagnetic body vapor-deposited thin film on a nonmagnetic substrate.
CONSTITUTION: A lubricant of an org. substance forming only a monomolecular layer is vapor-deposited on the surface of a magnetic recording medium obtained by providing a ferromagnetic body vapordeposited film on a nonmagnetic substrate. Perfluoroalkylcarboxylic acid such as perfluoroacetic acid and perfluoropropionic acid is used as the org. substance forming only a monomolecular layer. When the substances are vapor-deposited, the carboxylic acid is deposited on the side of the thin film magnetic recording medium and firmly attached to the side and the surface is formed with fluorocarbon. Since the surface layer of the fluorocarbon has small surface energy and is immediately vaporized and scattered, a monomolecular layer can be easily formed. Consequently, the medium is not stuck to a head during sliding, the characteristic is not deteriorated and the life of the magnetic recording medium is prolonged.
