PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a good surface characteristic and excellent magnetic characteristic, durability, etc. by subjecting a thermosetting resin into which pulverous inorg. powder is dispersed to compression molding to manufacture a bustrate, coating a magnetic paint on such substrate and drying the coating then bringing the coated surface into contact with a die surface finished to a specular surface and subjecting the substrate to compression molding under heating.
CONSTITUTION: The pulverous inorg. powder 1 of silica, alumina, mica, graphite, etc. having about 5μ average grain size is dispersed into a thermosetting resin such as epoxy resin, urethane resin or phenolic resin and the resin is subjected to compression molding under heating by which, for example, the disk substrate 2 is obtd. After the magnetic paint 3 is printed on one or both surfaces of the substrate 2, the paint is dried and the coated film surface 3 is brought into contact with the surface of the die 4 finished to the specular surface, by which the resin is molded under heating and pressurizing. The recording medium which has the smooth surface and excellent mechanical strength, obviates the exfoliation, etc. of the magnetic recording layer and has excellent durability is thus obtd. with good mass productivity.
