PURPOSE: To obtain the magnetic recording medium which maintains a lubricating effect over a long period of time and has an excellent traveling property by forming a top coat layer consisting of fluoro group-contg. alkyl carboxylate and perfluoropolyether on a ferromagnetic metal thin film.

CONSTITUTION: The compd. expressed by formula I and the perfluoropolyethers are used in combination as the lubricant of the magnetic recording medium constituted by forming the ferromagnetic thin film on a nonmagnetic base. In the formula I, R: a hydrocarbon group, P:≥4 integer, m: 2p=4≤m<2p integer, n:1≤n≤5 integer, m+n=2p+1. The hydrocarbon groups and may be std. or unstd. This group may also be a fluoro group-contg. hydrocarbon group or a hydrocarbon group contg. hetero atoms of N, O, P, etc.
