To attain excellent corrosion resistance and reproducing property by making N concentration high at the upper layer part, low at the lower layer part and O concentration high at the upper layer part and low at the lower layer part in a Fe-N-O based magnetic film.
This magnetic recording medium is provided with the Fe-N-O based magnetic film. N concentration in the Fe-N-O magnetic film is high at the upper layer part, low at the lower layer part and O concentration in the Fe-N-O based magnetic film is high at the upper layer part and low at the lower layer part. And, when each content of Fe, N and O is expressed on the vertical axis and the sputtering time is expressed on the horizontal axis in the Auger electron spechoscopic analysis of the Fe-N-O based magnetic film, with which the magnetic recording medium is provided, the peaks of N content and O content are recognized at the time near the start of the sputtering.
