PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium excellent in running durability without large friction coefficient and shaving by providing crater form recessed parts having a specific value of average diameter at a specific density on the surface of a background layer in a magnetic recording medium.
CONSTITUTION: On the surface of the background layer of the magnetic recording medium where the magnetic recording layer is provided on the surface of a nonmagnetic base, a filling agent and a binder are included on the other side and the background layer having a thickness of ≤2μm, 10W1,000 per 10 square micron of crator form recessed parts having ≤1.5μ of average diameter are provided. The average diameter of the crater form recessed parts is ≤1.5μ and the depth is preferably 0.01μW1μm at maximum depth. The craters play a role of lubricant pool and the continual lubricant effect is attained by providing the craters onto the background layer. If the average diameter of the recessed part of the craters exceeds 1.5μm, transfer is caused to the magnetic layer and adverse effect is given to the electromagnetic converting characteristic. Similarly, too much or too less number of the craters are injurious.
