PURPOSE: To stably attain recording and reproducing without causing degradation in image quality by narrowing the band required for the recording and reproducing of an FM modulation luminance signal as much as possible.
CONSTITUTION: In magnetic recording and reproducing device where a low-pass conversion is performed for the carrier color signal of a high resolution video signal in a recording system color signal processing circuit 106, an FM modulation is performed for a luminance signal, and recording and reproducing are performed in a magnetic head 109, a high-pass luminance signal is supplied to a high-pass multiplex circuit 104, the high-pass component of more than certain frequency of the luminance signal is folded to the frequency band side of the low-pass or middle-pass component of the luminance signal and a frequency multiplex is performed for it at this place. At this time, the folded and multiplexed frequency of the high-pass component is selected as a frequency interleave realtion (odd number times of the half of horizontal scanning frequency) for the low-pass or middle-pass component of the original luminance signal, and thus, an FM modulation recording is performed after the band is reduced. Consequently, the degradation of image quality and the lowering of stability in accordance with the shortening of a record wavelength are prevented.
