PURPOSE: To reduce the crosstalk between head chips to a small value and to perform recording and reproducing without damaging compatibility by providing two heads, where respective gaps are provided a prescribed length apart from each other and respective gap directions are different from each other, in one body.

CONSTITUTION: Head gaps 9a and 10a are so provided that their directions are the radial direction. Then, the compatibility with video and the compatibility between heads are held. Gap directions most suitable for tracks different in diameter are obtained as follows; the track having the largest diameter is defined as track O and tracks 13 and 14 are defined as the (m-1)th and m-th tracks. Gaps are set such length lG apart from each other that they do not receive mutual crosstalk. Azimuth losses XE and XO on even-numbered and odd-numbered tracks are obtained in accordance with equations I and II when the track width, the width of a guard band 15, the radius of the track O, the number of tracks, a maximum frequency, and a revolution speed are denoted as WT, WG, lR, 2n, (f), and 3,600rpm. On the basis of these equations, (m) is determined so that the maximum value of losses of all tracks is minimum or the sum of respective losses of tracks is minimum.
