PURPOSE: To assure good picture quality in each reproduction mode and at the same time to eliminate noises and shakes even in a special reproduction mode, by using five heads having different combinations of different head widths and azimuth angles to prescribe the attachment positions of those heads.
CONSTITUTION: A rotary drum 20 revolves heads 15W20, and a magnetic tape 21 is driven toward an arrow 22 in a normal record and reproduction modes. The heads 15 and 16 are used for a short time mode with different azimuth angles 15a 16a and set at the same level with a 180° phase difference. While heads 17 and 18 are used for a long time mode with different azimuth angles 17a and 18a and set at the same level with a 180° phase difference. These heads 15/17 and 16/18 are set with a comparatively small phase difference with approximately an equal azimuth angle. The head 19 is used for a special reproduction mode and set between heads 16 and 18 with approximately same azimuth angle as those of heads 15 and 17. The track width 19b of the head 19 is set smaller than widths 15b and 16b and larger than widths 17b and 18b.
