Abstract:
PURPOSE:To increase an error correcting capacity without increasing the length of a code word and to facilitate a high density recording by providing a table for stepwisely dividing a code word array to groups and storing it. CONSTITUTION:An encoder 1 has a convolution coder 6, a table 7 and a selector 8. Partial bit of one block of input information is convolution-encoded by the coder 6, the table 7 is accessed, a code word of the group read from the table 7 is selected by the remaining bit of the one block of the input information by the selector 8, and output. A code word array arranged so that a Hamming distance and an Euclidean distance are large between code words is stepwisely divided into groups and stored in the table 7. Accordingly, the code word in which the Hamming and the Euclidean distances between the code words in the group read from the table 7 are large and the error correcting capacity is large, is selected, and recorded.
