PURPOSE: To obtain a permanent magnet, having the magnetized pattern, which is extended to the adjusted depth by a method wherein energy is sent to the surface of a non-magnetized substrate, a heat treatment with which coercive force is lowered to the adjusted depth is conducted, and then the material is cooled by applying sufficient magnetic field for magnetization. CONSTITUTION: A non-magnetized substrate 10, having the upper surface 12 and the lower surface 14, is arranged in a magnetic field 16. Then, the cubic volume, where a laser beam 18 is made to irradiate in the form of a pattern on the surface 12, is heated up, and its coercive force is lowered to the value lower than the magnitude of the magnetic field of a bulk material. The magnetic field 16 is magnetized when the heated volume is cooled and its coercive force is obtained again. The pole of a magnet is determined by the direction of magnetic field, and various polarities can be given to the various parts of the pattern by changing the direction of magnetic field. The lattice and the pattern of a large region having the strength of magnetic field can be written on the surface without changing the micro-structure of material.
