PURPOSE: To obtain magneto-optical recording medium having high signal-to- noise ratio and excellent writing sensitivity by forming such a recording film having the composition expressed by RExTMy, excluding hydrogen with specified ranges of x and y, wherein RE is an rare earth element and TM is a transition metal element.
CONSTITUTION: The recording film contains hydrogen, rare earth element selected from Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dr and Ho, and transition metal element selected from Fe and Co. The composition of the recording film excluding hydrogen is expressed by RExTMy wherein RE is a rare earth element and TM is a transition metal element with x and y satisfying 15≤x≤50 and 50≤y≤80. Hydrogen is added to the recording film. A protective film 2 is inserted between a glass substrate 1 and the recording film 3 for enhancement of Kerr effect and protection of the recording film 3. Then the second protective film 4 is formed for protection of the recording film.
