Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a magnetoresistive(MR) read transducer having high stability and its manufacturing method.

CONSTITUTION: A soft magnetic field layer 18 and a MR layer 24 cover a central active region 12 and a passive terminal regions 14, 16 of the transducer 10. A nonmagnetic spacer layer 22 separates the soft magnetic film layer from the MR layer and covers the central active region and at least a part of two passive terminal regions. An antiferromagnetic layer 26 is in direct contact with the MR layer only at two passive terminal regions and an exchange bias filed making a prescribed acute angle with a vertical direction of the transducer is generated between the antiferromagnetic layer and the MR layer. Consequently, the MR layer is oriented with a prescribed acute angle and the soft magnetic film layer in the passive terminal regions is oriented in a horizontal direction by a magnetostatic bonding with the MR layer. In order to produce the transducer, a ferromagnetic layer is subjected to a heat treatment at above Neel temp. in an outer field to generate an inclined exchange bias field. Owing to the inclination, magnetic moments in the central active region and the passive end regions accord with each other during a reading operation.
