To provide a polymer for a positive hole transporting layer which is highly adhesive to an anode, can give a light emission high in luminance at a low applied voltage, and is little limitative in selection of a solvent on film fabrication of the polymer of the positive hole transporting layer by a wet method, as well as to provide an organic EL element which has high adhesion between the positive hole transporting layer and the anode and can give the light emission high in luminance at a low applied voltage.
A maleic anhydride polymer is shown by formula (I), which is obtained by copolymerizing a vinyl compound having a triphenylamino group or a carbazolyl group with maleic anhydride [wherein A is a triphenylamino group or a carbazolyl group]. The organic electroluminescence element is also provided, which has the anode, the positive hole transporting layer, a light emission layer and the cathode on a substrate and in which the positive hole transporting layer consists of the above maleic anhydride polymer or of the product having amide bonds or imide bonds formed by the above maleic anhydride polymer and a compound having two or more amino groups.
