NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [X is H, halogen or trifluoromethyl; R is OR1 (R1 is 1-5C alkyl, aryl or benzyl) or NR2R3 (R2 and R3 are each H, 1-5C alkyl, phenyl, benzyl or heterocyclic group)].
EXAMPLE: 3,4-Dichloro-2,5-dihydro-2,5-dioxo-β-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-pyrrole-1- propionic methyl ester.
USE: An agricultural/horticultural bactericide.
PREPARATION: In accordance with the reaction formulas, a cinnamic acid derivative of formula II is allowed to react with hydroxylamine in an organic solvent such as ethanol at room temperature to a temperature close to the boiling point of the solvent to obtain a compound of formula III. This compound is then made to react with a compound of formula IV in a solvent such as acetic acid to obtain a compound of formula V, which is then esterified or put to amidation by a conventional method, thus obtaining the objective compound of the formula I.
