PURPOSE: To thin a catalyst layer and carry a specified amount of a catalyst by bonding a sheet-shaped catalyst layer containing carbon powder carried with a platinum catalyst on carbon paper, to which water repellent is applied, by heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Ammonium carbonate and PTFE dispersion are added to carbon powder carried with a platinum catalyst, and they are kneaded and rolled to make a sheet, then heated to remove the ammonium carbonate and PTFE dispersion. The sheet is stacked on carbon paper to which water repellent treatment is applied, and pressed and sintered. A solution prepared by dissolving chloroplatinic acid in ethyl alcohol is uniformly spreaded on the catalyst layer. By adjusting the amount of platinum in the solution, a specified amount of platinum can be carried. After the solution is spreaded on the catalyst layer, the catalyst layer is dried to remove the solvent, and heated to deposit platinum on the catalyst layer.
