Title:
MANUFACTURE OF ARALKENE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5655318
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1,269,420. Aralkenes. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 4 Aug., 1969 [5 Aug., 1968], No. 38959/69. Heading C5E. Aralkenes, particularly styrene and alphamethylstyrene, are obtained by the catalytic dehydration of corresponding aralkanols in the presence of a liquid phase reaction medium and at a temperature above 200‹ C. but below the decomposition temperature of the medium. Suitable catalysts include mineral acids, carboxylic acids, aryl sulphonic acids and solids having surface areas above 15 sq. m./gm. These catalysts are well exemplified, particularly in Example IV. The medium may be polar, e.g. pyrogallol, 1-naphthol, pyrocatechol, resorcinol, 1,2,4-benzentriol, phloroglucinol or a cresol, or non-polar, e.g. triphenylmethane, anthracene, phenanthrene, white oil or a mineral oil. The preferred medium, however, is the high boiling residue formed during the dehydration reaction. The feed to the process may contain 1-50 wt. per cent water.
