PURPOSE: To simplify the manufacturing process of a cadmium electrode for an alkaline storage battery, and increase the performance of the battery by using cadmium oxide powder containing metal cadmium on the surfaces of the powder grains as an active material for a pasted cadmium electrode, and thereby enabling rapid initial charge of the battery.
CONSTITUTION: Cadmium oxide powder is mixed with nickel powder used as a conductive material, before the mixture is added and kneaded with ethylene glycol in which polyvinyl alcohol used as a binding agent is dissolved, thus a paste being prepared. Thus prepared paste is homogeneously applied to the surfaces of a punched metal made of nickel-plated iron, and the punched metal coated with the paste is dried and pressed, thereby a pasted cadmium electrode being manufactured. Either all or part of the former cadmium oxide powder used as the active material of the paste contains metal cadmium on the surfaces of the powder grains. The cadimium oxide powder coated with metal cadmium is manufactured by partially reducing cadmium oxide powder in a stream of hydrogen. The content of metal cadmium atoms is preferably 10∼50% of the cadmium oxide atoms.
