PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers suitable for highly reinforced composites rapidly by melt-blowing a specified petroleum pitch with a low mesophase content.
CONSTITUTION: Fibers are formed by melt-blowing a petroleum pitch with a softening point of ≥240°C, preferably ≥266°C, a xylene insoluble content of about 15-40 wt.0/o, a quinoline insoluble content of about 0-5.0 wt.%, a coking value of 65-96 wt.% and a mesophase content of about 0-5 wt.%, preferably about 0-0.25 wt.%. The petroleum pitch having a short stabilizing period is obtained by reducing a mesophase product to less than about 5% by oxidation of an unoxidized arom. carbonaceous pitch and vacuum flash distilling it. Of hydrogen in the pitch. about 20-40 mole% is alpha hydrogen, and a sulfur content is about 0.1-4 wt.%.
