PURPOSE: To increase the effective volume into which an active material paste is packed by pressing the bones of an expanded belt-like grid piece without pressing the nodes of the belt-like grid piece in flattening it.
CONSTITUTION: A plural number of dies 1 which are arranged on both sides in such a manner that they gradually narrow toward the moving direction, and a cutter 2 which gradually narrows toward the moving direction are installed in such a manner that they can reciprocate vertically. An expanded belt-like grid piece 4 is obtained by sending a long narrow strip 3 made of a lead alloy sheet between the dies 1 and the cutter 2. Next, when the belt-like grid piece 4 is flattened with a flattening part 5, bones 8 are pressed without pressing nodes 9 of the belt-like grid piece 4 by using a roller 14 provided with higher parts 12 and lower parts 13 and a roller 17 provided with higher parts 15 and lower parts 16, and by shifting the higher parts 12 and the higher parts 15 from each other by the half wave length. As a result, since there is no possibility that the nodes 9 are crushed, any decrease of an effective volume into which an active material paste is packed can be prevented.
