PURPOSE: To ensure compression, recovery, and stress retention suitable for use as gasketing material by curing under heat and pressure a laminate of non-woven fibrous fabric impregnated with inorganic filler in a solution of curable elastomer.
CONSTITUTION: In order to be suitable for use as gasketing material, a laminate of non-woven fibrous fabric impregnated with inorganic filler in a solution of curable elastomer is cured under heat and pressure to obtain a sheet of compression at least 4%, recovery at least 40%, and stress retention at least 17.5 MPa at a thickness of 1.5 mm and temperature of 300°C. Preferably, the fabric employed is made of temperature-resistant fiber, such as carbon, poly, or glass fiber. If a glass tissue is employed, it is preferably one whose glass fibers are bonded with adhesive.
