PURPOSE: To greatly shorten the time for which a coupler is fitted to a manufacturing device and to improve the manufacture of the coupler by dividing the time required for the setting of an adhesive by a half-setting state and a subsequent setting state, and detaching the coupler from the manufacturing equipment after the adhesive half-sets device and processing it.
CONSTITUTION: Coated optical fibers 1 and 2 are clamped by clamping members 5 and 6 fixed on air stages 3 and 4 which can finely be moved in the direction of the optical axes. A heater 7 such as a burner is arranged below the part where the jacket is removed. The air stages 3 and 4 slightly float over a substrate 10 to become easy to move when compressed air is admitted from intakes 8 and 9. Further, the air stages 3 and 4 are tensed in the optical axis direction with a fishing line 12 and a weight 13 connected through rollers 11... and then the coated optical fibers 1 and 2 clamped on the air stages 3 and 4 are given tension. A tension adding mechanism detaches the coupler from the clamping members 5 and 6 basing on 50% hardness of the adhesive as a standard and the adhesive is made to completely cured in a storage box.
