Abstract:

PURPOSE: To make it possible to effectively recover a decrease in light output due to machining without a causing dimensional change and a damage by machining a specified fluorescent ceramic sinter activated with a rare earth element, followed by heat treatment.

CONSTITUTION: A fluorescent ceramic sinter activated with a rare earth element, composed mainly of a rare earth oxysulfide of the formula (wherein M is at least one rare earth element) (e.g. Gd2O2S:Pr), is machined to give a workpiece of a desired shape. This workpiece is heated at 200-600°C for at least 10min, preferably 1-15hr, preferably in a lowly oxidizing atmosphere or in an inert gas atmosphere.
