PURPOSE: To obtain the high carbon stainless steel material having excellent quenched hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance by incorporating specific amt. of N into a high carbon martensitic stainless steel and crystallizing out Cr nitride before the formation of eutectic Cr carbide in the solidifying stage of the molten steel.
CONSTITUTION: A cast billet of a high carbon stainless steel contg., by weight, 0.5 to 1.2% C, 15 to 20% Cr, <1.5% Si, <1.0% Mn and 0.05 to 0.50% N or furthermore contg. one or two kinds of <1.5% Mo and <1.0% V is manufactured in a vacuum melting furnace. The cast billet is heated to >1150°C, is hot-rolled and is thereafter cold-rolled into a cold rolled sheet, e.g., having 1.5mm sheet thickness and is thereafter annealed. The stainless steel sheet is successively hardened and is subjected to tempering treatment. Since the steel sheet has high N content, Cr nitride is formed in the stage of solidification into a cast billet, the formation of huge eutectic Cr carbide is suppressed to form uniformly fine hard Cr carbide, by which the martensitic stainless steel as a hard stock in which wear resistance is required, e.g., a razor's edge can be obtd.
