PURPOSE: To prolong the roll useful life by forming ruggedness of a prescribed shape on the body surface and then performing scale generating treatment.

CONSTITUTION: Working is performed to form ruggedness parts 2 on the smooth surface of the body base material 1 of a roll with a tool such as a diamond cutter, etc. The ruggedness parts 2 are desired to have whose peak-to-valley depth (h) of 20W100μm, width (w) of 100W300μm, ruggedness spacing (d) of max. 1mm. Then, a batch furnace 3 is installed to cover the body 1 and to form a gas atmosphere 4. A furnace inside temp. caused by gas atmosphere of a combustion of LPG is held about 900W1,200°C to stick and form scales on the ruggedness parts of the roll surface. Hence, the scales strongly adhere to the roll base material 1 as if the scales 2 are gnawed thereinto. Therefore, the useful life of a high pressure hot rolling roll is prolonged.
