PURPOSE: To enable manufacturing of lead storage batteries selected into two species of a high capacity type and a long life type by changing a ratio of the amount of paste, with which a non-formation anode plate is filled, to the amount of paste, with which a non-formation cathode plate is filled, so that phase composition in an active material at a formed cathode plate of post-formation is changed.
CONSTITUTION: A relation between a ratio of a paste filling amount at a non-formation cathode plate to that at a non-formation anode plate and phase composition of an active material at a formed cathode is as follows: as the paste filling amount at the non-formation anode plate decreases, a weight percent ratio of α-PbO2 to β-PbO2 in the active material at the formed cathode plate decreases. Namely, when the paste filling amounts at the non-formation anode plate and at the non-formation cathode plate are changed, phase composition in the cathode active material of post-formation can be controlled. A lead storage battery rich in β-PbO2 is provided with high capacity of 6 hr or so, and the lead storage battery rich in α-PbO2 is provided with no high capacity but with the number of charge and discharge times of 600 cycles or more. Hence, the lead storage batteries can be manufactured selectively in accordance with applications.
