PURPOSE: To lower the manufacturing cost and improve work efficiency by decreasing the use amount of expensive xenon gas.
CONSTITUTION: A stem to which an infrared ray detecting part is stuck and a cap are put together by electric welding in air. Then, after the stem and the cap are welded each other in air, the stem and the cap are welded in a transparent chamber 16 to give an infrared ray detecting element A and a large number of infrared ray detecting elements A are arranged vertically and transversely. The chamber 16 is once made vacuum (about 0.1 Torr) and then the inside of the chamber is made xenon gas atmosphere by introducing xenon into it. Laser light beams from a laser oscillator 17 are emitted from the outside of the chamber 16 toward the hole 12 which is previously pierced in a stem of an infrared ray detecting element A to melt the circumference of the hole 12 and close the hole 12. The laser oscillator 17 is shifted vertically and transversely to close the holes of all other stems of the infrared ray detecting elements A.
