PURPOSE: To obtain a metal matrix composite material by a simple and reliable method by heating a first supply source of a parent metal at the melting point or higher and spontaneously infiltrating the parent metal in a permeable lump consisting of a filler.
CONSTITUTION: The quantity of a parent metal contained in a first supply source 3 of the parent metal is not a sufficient quantity for completely infiltrating a permeable lump 5 of a ceramic material (e.g. ceramic pre-foam). Thus, a storage source 4 of the parent metal is brought into contact with the first supply source 3 of the parent metal and the both are communicated with each other. The first supply source 3 of the parent metal is supplemented by the parent metal in a storage source 4 in atmosphere containing nitrogen at an infiltration temperature and the infiltration of the pre-foam 5 is completed. In addition, the excessive parent metal is supplied from the storage source 4 to manufacture a complex composite material body.
