Abstract:
PURPOSE: To improve efficiency of raw material and heat energy by feeding briquettes as raw material by gravity via a supply pipe into a reducing furnace with keeping the briquettes in contact with each other in a carbon reduction method.
CONSTITUTION: The raw material containing magnesium oxide and carbon is formed into briquettes 6. The above briquettes 6 are fed continuously in a state kept in contact with each other by gravity via the supply pipe 7 into the reducing furnace 1. Subsequently, the above briquettes 6 are heated in the furnace 1 under reduced pressure so as to produce magnesium vapor. The this vapor is introduced into a cooling chamber 9 to undergo adiabatic expansion, so that metallic magnesium can be obtained.
